How great is the finite element error compared to the approximation error when mortar elements are considered? The quotient can be estimated by the norm of a non-orthogonal projector. It is a constant independent of \(h\) when the \(h\)-method is used. The author and \textit{M. Suri} [Math. Comput. 69, No. 230, 521--546 (2000; Zbl 0944.65113)] showed upper bounds for the \(p\)- (and \(hp\)-) method. The characteristic quotient with respect to the \(L_2\)-norm was shown to at most \(O(p^{1/2})\), and \(O(p^{3/4})\) for the \(H^{1/2}\)-norm respectively. An eigenvalue problem in the present paper and numerical calculations of the eigenvalues assure that the asymptotics above are optimal. Reviewer's remark: By using a strengthened Cauchy inequality the referee has shown in an unpublished note that the \(O(p^{1/2})\) behavior in the \(L_2\) setting is indeed sharp.
