The study investigates transient an inverse heat conduction problem, physically involving determination of the heat flux and the thermal stresses in multilayer gun barrel with thermal contact resistance. The inverse problem involves predicting the unknown time-dependent heat flux over some specified time using some known temperature data obtained from the corresponding direct problem. A sensitivity problem and an adjoint problem are set up in order to determine the expressions for the determination of the unknown heat flux and the resulting expression is minimized using the conjugate gradient method.
