The Kuznetsov trace formula [\textit{N. V. Kuznetsov}, Mat. Sb., Nov. Ser. 111(153), 334-383 (1980; Zbl 0427.10016)] relates a weighted sum of classical Kloosterman sums to a weighted sum of Fourier coefficients of \(GL(2)\) automorphic forms and other spectral information. The formula may be derived from a ``soft'' version, which relates a sum of Kloosterman sums to a spectral term which may be expressed in terms of Fourier coefficients but which does not give the relation between the weights as directly. (For a presentation of these ideas for an arbitrary Fuchsian group of the first kind, see \textit{J. Cogdell} and \textit{I. Piatetski-Shapiro}, The arithmetic and spectral analysis of Poincaré series. (Notes prepared by Ze'ev Rudnick), Perspectives in Mathematics 13, Academic Press (1990; Zbl 0714.11032).) In this article the author develops such a ``soft'' formula where the Kloosterman sums are replaced by twisted sums, the twist corresponding to a quadratic extension of \({\mathbb Q}\). The author proceeds adelically, integrating a geometric kernel function \(K_f(g,h)\) with an explicit test function \(f\). He computes this in terms of Kloosterman sums and compares this with a spectral expansion. Then in the last section he compares the formula so-obtained to one over the quadratic field corresponding to the twist, thereby lifting the ``soft'' Kuznetsov formula to a quadratic extension.
