Let $K$ be an algebraic number field, and let $A$ be a quaternion algebra over $K$ satisfying the Eichler condition. Let $L\subset A$ be a quadratic extension of $K$ with a (full) order $\Omega$. The selectivity problem asks whether any Eichler order $E$ in $A$ contains a conjugate of $\Omega$. An embedding $\Omega\hookrightarrow E$ is said to be optimal if $E\cap L=\Omega$. Extending previous work of Eichler and Chinburg-Friedman, \textit{C. Maclachlan} [J. Number Theory 128, No. 10, 2852--2860 (2008; Zbl 1220.11140)] determined the existence of optimal embeddings in case that $E$ is of square-free level. In the paper under review, this restriction is removed. Some results of \textit{J. Brzezinski} [Comment. Math. Helv. 66, No. 2, 302--318 (1991; Zbl 0733.11047)] on local embedding numbers are extended.
