The authors consider the following elliptic problem \[ \begin{gathered} -\Delta u= |u|^p- s\varphi_1(x)\quad\text{in }\Omega,\\ u= 0\quad\text{on }\partial\Omega\end{gathered}\tag{1} \] where \(p\in (1,{N+2\over N-2})\) if \(N\geq 3\), \(p\in (1,+\infty)\) if \(N= 1,2\), \(s> 0\) is a positive parameter, \(\varphi_1(x)> 0\) is the eigenfunction of \(-\Delta\) with Dirichlet boundary condition corresponding to the first eigenvalue in a bounded smooth domain \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb{R}^N\). The authors prove the Lazer-McKenna conjecture for a superlinear elliptic problem (1) of Ambrosetti-Prodi type by constructing solutions with sharp peaks. To this end, the authors use the reduction methods to construct directly solutions which have \(k\) sharp peaks near the maximum points of \(\varphi_i(x)\) for any positive integer \(k\).
