The paper deals with the following question related to the quasi-Banach range of the discrete Hilbert transform \[ (\mathcal{H}^d x)(n):=\frac{1}{\pi} \sum_{k\neq n} \frac{x(k)}{k-n}. \] Given a symmetric quasi-Banach sequence space \(E=E(\mathbb{Z})\), can we determine the least symmetric quasi-Banach sequence space \(F=F(\mathbb{Z})\) such that \(\mathcal{H}^d(E)\subseteq F\)? The space \(F(\mathbb{Z})\) is referred as the optimal range space for the operator \(\mathcal{H}^d\) related to the domain \(E(\mathbb{Z}) \subset l_{\text{log}}(\mathbb{Z})\) which is the Lorentz space of sequences associated with the function \(\log(1+t)\), \(t>0\). It is shown that the maximal symmetric domain for \(\mathcal{H}^d\) is exactly the space \(l_{\text{log}}(\mathbb{Z})\). The question of finding out this optimal range reduces to the problem of describing the optimal receptacle of the discrete Calderón operator \(S^d\), defined as \[ (S^d x)(n)=\frac{1}{n+1} \sum_{k=0}^n x(k)+\sum_{k=n+1}^{\infty} \frac{x(k)}{k}, \ x\in l_{\text{log}}(\mathbb{Z}). \] The main result of the paper is the following: If \(E(\mathbb{Z^+}) \subset l_{\text{log}}(\mathbb{Z^+})\) then, for \(\mu(x)\) denoting the decreasing rearrangement of the sequence \(|x|\), with respect to the counting measure, the sequence space \[ F(\mathbb{Z^+}):=\{ x\in (l_{1,\infty}+l_{\infty})(\mathbb{Z^+}): \text{there exists}\ y\in E(\mathbb{Z^+}), \ \mu(x)\leq S^d\mu(y)\}, \] equipped with the quasi-norm \[ \|x\|_{F(\mathbb{Z^+})}:=\inf \{\|y \|_{E(\mathbb{Z^+})}: \mu(x)\leq S^d\mu(y) \} <+\infty, \] is a quasi-Banach space which is the optimal symmetric quasi-Banach range for the operator \(S^d\) on \(E(\mathbb{Z^+})\). As an application it is described the optimal range \(F(\mathbb{Z})\) for the operator \(\mathcal{H}^d\) corresponding to the sequence space weak-\(l^1\), namely, for \(E=l_{1,\infty}\).
