Let \(G\) be a semisimple real Lie group, \(K\) its maximal compact subgroup, \(\Gamma\subset G\) a lattice, and \(Y:=\Gamma\backslash G / K\) the corresponding locally symmetric space of dimension \(d\) and rank \(r\). If \(\psi_j\) \((j\ge 0)\) constitutes an orthonormal basis in \(L^2(Y )\) of simultaneous eigenfunctions of the full ring of invariant differential operators on \(Y\), Sarnak proved the spherical convex bound \[ \Vert\psi_j|_\Omega\Vert_\infty\ll_\Omega\lambda_j^{\frac{d-r}4}. \] The problem of improving this bound is called the subconvexity problem. When \(d=2\) and \(r=1\) \textit{H. Iwaniec} and \textit{P. Sarnak} [Ann. Math. (2) 141, No. 2, 301--320 (1995; Zbl 0833.11019)] improved the exponent to \(\frac5{24}+\varepsilon\) for any \(\varepsilon>0\) for congruence arithmetic lattices \(\Gamma\). Later, \textit{S. Marshall} [``Upper bounds for Maass forms on semisimple groups'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1405.7033}] obtained the exponent \(\frac{d-r}4-\delta\) (for some \(\delta>0)\) for more general arithmetic congruence lattices. The goal of this paper is to extend such bounds to non-spherical situations, that is, to non-trivial \(K\)-types in the Peter-Weyl decomposition of \(L^2(\Gamma\backslash G)\) for Hecke-Maass forms of rank 1 and a large class of compact arithmetic quotients \(\Gamma\backslash G\). Their bound is achieved in Section 4, where they deal with arithmetic congruence lattices in \(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)\) and \(\mathrm{SO}(3)\). In later sections, they treat more general classes of semisimple algebraic groups.
