The author composes two upper bounds for the sup-norm of Hecke-Maass eigenforms on varying arithmetic surfaces. First, following a result by \textit{V. Blomer} and \textit{R. Holowinsky} [Invent. Math. 179, No. 3, 645--681 (2010; Zbl 1243.11059)] he lets \(f\) be an \(L^2\)-normalized Hecke-Maass cuspidal newform of square-free level \(N\) and bounded Laplace eigenvalue \(\lambda\leq T\), ending up with the improved bound \(\|f\|_{\infty}\ll_{T} N^{-1/23}\). The proof rests on delicate geometric arguments. As the author points out, the case of holomorphic Hecke forms of fixed weight and of general central character would not produce any new difficulties. Some possible ways to improve the result further are being introduced. Secondly, the author proves a corresponding result for compact arithmetic surfaces: For all \(L^{2}\)-normalized Hecke-Maass newforms on the compact arithmetic surface \(X_{0}(\mathfrak{n})=\Gamma_{0}(\mathfrak{n})\backslash\mathfrak{H}\) of bounded eigenvalue \(\lambda\leq T\) \(\|f\|_{\infty}\ll_{T,\varepsilon} N^{-1/24+\varepsilon}\), where \(N=\mathbf{N}\mathfrak{n}\geq 1\) denotes the norm of \(\mathfrak{n}\) and \(\varepsilon >0\) is arbitrary small. The exponent is corrected in an erratum from the original \(-\frac{1}{12}\) to \(-\frac{1}{24}\). The proof relies on an estimate for the number of lattice points in an annulus domain.
