In this paper the authors consider the following hyperbolic partial differential equation with finite delays \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\): \[\frac{\partial^2 u(x,y)}{\partial x\partial y}=f(x,y,u(x,y),u(x-\alpha,y-\beta)),\ \ {\text{if} } \; (x,y)\in D,\] \[u(x,y)=\phi(x,y)\quad {\text{if}}\; (x,y)\in\tilde{D},\] \[u(x,0)=\varphi(x),\quad u(0,y)=\psi(y),\quad (x,y)\in D,\] where \(D=[0,a]\times [0,b]\), \(\tilde{D}=[-\alpha,a]\times [-\beta,b]\setminus (0,a]\times (0,b]\), \(a,b,\alpha, \beta>0\), \(f\in C(D\times \mathbb{R}^2)\), \(\phi\in C(\tilde{D})\), \(\varphi\in C([0,a])\) and \(\psi\in C([0,b])\).\par Under the additional assumption that \(f\) satisfies the Lipschitz condition in view of the third variable, it is proven that the above problem possesses a unique solution, defined on the rectangle \([-\alpha,a]\times [-\beta,b]\). The proof of this result is based on an application of the progressive contraction technique in a two-dimensional region. Next, under the additional assumption that \(f\) satisfies the Lipschitz condition in view of the last two variables, it is proven that the above equation is stable in the Hyers-Ulam sense.
