The authors aim to derive a port-Hamiltonian formulation for nonlinear electrical circuits. Recently modeling by port-Hamiltonian system has attracted a lot of attention and became a powerful tool in various areas of applications. Port-Hamiltonian modeling of constrained dynamical systems arising in multibody systems and electrical circuits leads to differential-algebraic equations. However, an approach to electrical circuits has been only investigated for the case where the circuit contains only capacitances and inductances. The purpose of this work is to extend the port-Hamiltonian approach to a wider class of electrical circuits that contain a variety of electrical components such as resistances, capacitances, inductances, diodes, transformers, tansistors, current sources and voltage sources. First, the authors model each circuit component as an individual port-Hamiltonian system. Then, the overall circuit model is derived by considering an interconnection of port-Hamiltonian systems representing the components. The interconnection structure is described by the underlying graph of the given electrical circuit. Finally, this modeling approach is compared with standard formulations of nonlinear electrical circuits such as modified nodal analysis and the modified loop analysis. An AC/DC converter example is also given for illustration.
