This article discusses the characteristic error for three-dimensional spatial discretizations composed of hexahedral, prismatic and tetrahedral elements. The shape of the dispersion curves for these element types are characterized and their impact on the resolution of Implicit Large Eddy Simulation analyzed. Numerical experiments are also included.
