The author investigates the following four problems: (1) a general approach for discretizing nonlinear dynamical systems and field theories on suitable functional spaces, (2) symmetry and integrability for the difference equations; (3) a class of discrete KdV equations, and (4) the hierarchies of discrete evolution equations of Gelfand-Dickey type utilizing an operator version of the standard Lax pair technique.
