On metric Diophantine approximation in matrices and Lie groups (Q2338967): Difference between revisions

In this note, the authors announce few remarkable results concerning the Diophantine exponent of analytic submanifolds of \(m\times n\) real matrices. In particular, a family of algebraic obstructions to the extremality of such manifolds is identified and for an algebraic submanifold defined over \(\mathbb Q\) a formula for the exponent is also given. Subsequently, these results are applied to the determination of the Diophantine exponent of rational nilpotent Lie groups. This paper also affirmatively answers a question raised by \textit{V. Beresnevich, D. Kleinbock} and \textit{G. Margulis} in \(\S 7.2\) of [``Non-planarity and metric Diophantine approximation for systems of linear forms'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1302.6560}].
