    The authors introduce the Apollonius type additive functional equation \[ f(z-x)+f(z-y)=2f(z-\frac{x+y}{4})-\frac{1}{2}f(x+y) \] They show that if \(r\neq 1\), \(\theta\geq 0\) are real numbers and \(f\) is a mapping from a \(C^*\)-ternary ring \(A\) into a \(C^*\)-ternary ring \(B\) such that \[ \| f(z-\mu x)+\mu f(z-y)+\frac{1}{2}f(x+y)\| \leq\| 2f(z-\frac{x+y}{4})\| \tag{\(*\)} \] \[ \| f([x,y,z])-[f(x),f(y),f(z)])\| \leq \theta(\| x\| ^{3r}+\| y\| ^{3r}+\| z\| ^{3r}) \] for all \(x, y, z\in A\) and all \(\mu\in {\mathbb T}=\{\lambda \in {\mathbb C}: | \lambda| =1\}\), then \(f\) is a \(C^*\)-ternary homomorphism (the authors used the terminology `ternary \(C^*\)-algebra' instead of the known terminology `ternary \(C^*\)-ring'). The proof is based on the fact that if \(f\) satisfies \((\ast)\), then \(f\) is additive. They also show that if \(f\) is a mapping from a \(JB^*\)-triple \(A\) into a \(JB^*\)-triple \(B\) satisfying \((\ast)\) and \[ \| f({xyz})-{f(x)f(y)f(z)}\| \leq \theta(\| x\| ^{3r}+\| y\| ^{3r}+\| z\| ^{3r}) \] for some \(r\neq 1\), \(\theta\geq 0\), all \(x, y, z\in A\) and all \(\mu\in {\mathbb T}\), then \(f\) is a \(JB^*\)-triple homomorphism. It should be noted that the papers [Approximate \(C^*\)-ternary ring homomorphisms, Bull. Brazilian Math. Soc. (to appear); arXiv:math/0511539] and [Bull. Belg. Math. Soc. -- Simon Stevin 14, No. 1, 135--142 (2007; Zbl 1132.39026)] by \textit{M. S. Moslehian} include the first results about the stability of ternary \(C^*\)-rings.
