Let \((M^n, g)\) be a compact, connected and oriented \(n\)-dimensional Riemannian manifold without boundary isometrically immersed by \(\varphi\) into the \((n+1)\)-dimensional simply connected space-form \((\mathbb M^{n+1}(\delta), \bar g)\) of sectional curvature \(\delta\). The number \(R(M)=\inf\{r > 0;\;\exists_x\in \mathbb M^{n+1}(\delta),\;\varphi(M)\subset B(x,r)\}\), where \(B(x, r)\) is an open ball of center \(x\) and radius \(r\) is called the extrinsic radius of \((M, g)\). It is well-known that the extrinsic radius is bounded from below in terms of the mean curvature, namely, \(t_\delta(R(M))\geq \frac1{\| H\| _\infty}\), where \(t_\delta(x)=\frac1{\sqrt{| \delta| }}\tan(\sqrt{| \delta| }x)\) with \(t_0(x)=x\), and \(H\) is the mean curvature. In this paper, the author proves pinching results for the extrinsic radius of compact hypersurfaces in space forms. In the hyperbolic space, it is shown that if the volume of \(M\) is \(1\), then there exists a constant \(C\) depending on the dimension of \(M\) and the \(L^\infty\)-norm of the second fundamental form \(B\) such that the pinching condition \(\tanh(R(M))< \frac1{\| H\| _\infty}+C\) implies that \(M\) is diffeomorphic to an \(n\)-dimensional sphere. Also, the author proves the corresponding result for hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space and the sphere with the \(L^p\)-norm of \(H\) instead of the \(L^\infty\)-norm.
