The representation theory of vertex operator algebras makes use of commutator formulas in ways that are reminiscent of Lie algebra theory. However, in certain situations, such as in the study of some intertwining operators, where commutator formulas ore not available, one needs to develop new methods. In the paper [J. Algebra 409, 344--361 (2014; Zbl 1315.17022)], \textit{Y.-Z. Huang} and the author used weak associativity and formulas for residues of formal series to prove results without using the commutator formula. In the present paper, the author uses these methods to construct functors in certain categories of modules for certain associative algebras generalizing Zhu's algebra. This allows him to prove results without the use of commutator formulas.
