Two definitions of bounded variation for a function \(u\colon X\to\mathbb R\) (due to \textit{M. Miranda} [J. Math. Pures Appl. (9) 82, No. 8, 975--1004 (2003; Zbl 1109.46030)] and \textit{O. Martio} [Adv. Calc. Var. 9, No. 4, 305--322 (2016; Zbl 1360.26010)]), defined over a complete metric space \(X\) endowed with a Borel measure \(\mu\), both based on an upper gradient approach, are shown to be equivalent provided certain regularity conditions related to the behaviour of \(\mu\) on balls in \(X\) (called doubling property and \(1\)-Poincaré inequality) hold.
