Let \(\mathcal A_n\) be the class of groups \(G\) such that the cohomology groups of \(G\) and of its profinite completion \(\widehat G\) are the same up to dimension \(n\), for all finite discrete modules. In the paper under review it is shown that certain free products with amalgam and HNN extensions are in the class \(\mathcal A_n\). Also, the residually finite groups \(G\) in \(\mathcal A_2\) are studied. Such a \(G\) is characterized by the property that every extension of a residually finite group by \(G\) is also residually finite. These groups have been considered by \textit{J.~M.~Corson} and \textit{T.~J.~Ratkovich} [J. Group Theory 9, No. 4, 497-505 (2006; Zbl 1130.20028)].
