Let \(N_0(V)=\#\{\lambda_j \leq 0\}\) be the number of nonpositive eigenvalues of an operator \(H=H_0 - V(x)\) on \(L^2(X,\mathfrak{B}, \mu)\), where \(X\) is a complete \(\sigma\)-compact metric space with the Borel \(\sigma\)-algebra \(\mathfrak{B}(X)\) and a \(\sigma\)-finite measure \(\mu(dx)\). The standard Swikel-Lieb-Rosenblum (CLR) approach gives estimates for \(N_0(V)\) in the case that the Markov process \(x(t)\) associated with \(H_0\) is transient. This paper deals with the estimates for \(N_0(V)\) when \(x(t)\) is recurrent. The estimates for \(N_0(V)\) with the recurrent process are given by transforming the given process into a transient process using partial annihilation. This result generalizes the Bargmann estimate for the 1-D Schrödinger operator \(H=-\frac{d^2}{dx^2}-V(x)\) to a wider class of operators. The generalized results are applied to give explicit estimates of \(N_0(V)\) for several classes of Schrödinger type operators on Riemannian manifolds, lattices, fractals, etc. Estimates of the Lieb-Thirring sums for the recurrent underlying process are also obtained.
