A new quasilinearization approach for identifying the unknown parameter \(q\) in nonlinear abstract Cauchy problems of the type \( {\dot z}(t) = Az(t) + F(q,t,z(t)), z(0) = z_0, t \in (0,T)\)in the Banach space \(Z\)with \(A\) being the infinitesimal generator of an analytic semigroup on \(Z\) is introduced together with the derivation of the algorithm and sufficient conditions for its convergence in terms of the regularity of the solutions with respect to the unknown parameter. The admissible parameter set is a subset of a separable Hilbert space. The base of the algorithm is to define \( q^{k+1}\) to be a minimizer of a modified error criterion by differentiating the criterion, setting the result equal to zero, solving for \(q\) and calling the solution \( q^{k+1}\). A comparison with the standard approach [see, e.g., \textit{D. W. Brewer, J. A. Burns, E. M. Cliff}, Q. Appl. Math. 51, No. 1, 1--22 (1993; Zbl 0782.65067)] based on sensitivity equations is presented and an application is included in which the nonphysical parameters in a mathematical model for shape memory alloys are estimated.
