\textit{J.-B. Bost} and \textit{A. Connes} [Sel. Math., New Ser. 1, No. 3, 411--457 (1995; Zbl 0842.46040)] have constructed a \(C^*\)-dynamical system associated with the field \(\mathbb Q\) of rational numbers. Analogous to this system, in this paper Jacob considers a \(C^*\)-dynamical system (that consists of a \(C^*\)-algebra \(\mathfrak C\) and a flow, i.e. an action of \(\mathbb R\), on it) associated with any global function field \(\mathfrak k\) with place \(\infty\). This new system of Jacob (as well as the BC system) have Galois symmetry, i.e. an action of the Galois group of a field extension of \(\mathfrak k\) (resp. \(\mathbb Q\)) on the \(C^*\)-algebra \(\mathfrak C\) commuting with the flow. The \(C^*\)-algebra \(\mathfrak C\) is constructed as the maximal (or full) \(C^*\)-algebra of a certain groupoid that comes from the product space of the union of the dual groups of the discrete abelian torsion groups for Drinfeld modules over the completion of an algebraic closure of the completion of \(\mathfrak k\) at \(\infty\) and the Grothendieck group of the abelian semigroup of nonzero ideals of the subring of integers of \(\mathfrak k\). The fixed point subalgebra of \(\mathfrak C\) under the Galois symmetry is also considered. Moreover, the Galois invariant KMS states at low and high temperatures of the system of \(\mathfrak C\) are also investigated. In particular, the space of extremal those states at low temperature is shown to be principal homogeneous under the Galois action, and furthermore, the state at high temperature is shown to be unique, which shows that a phase transition with spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs at temperature one. The type of the von Neumann algebra which is the weak closure of \(\mathfrak C\) in the GNS representation for that state is also determined. More details about functions fields, Drinfeld modules, and Hayes' explicit class field theory, and about the algebraic structure of the system of \(\mathfrak C\) and KMS states of the system, as well as many items in the References are included in this paper under review.
