[The reviewer finds as most suitable to mention the main result of the paper and to adapt its abstract.] Theorem 1.1. Given $\alpha \in (0,1)$ the is $c=c(\alpha)>0$ (depending continously on $\alpha$) such that the following holds. Let $E \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be a set with the following property: there is a set $\Omega$ of lines with $\dim_H(\Omega) \geq 2\alpha$, such that \[ \dim_H(E\cap \omega) \geq \alpha\text{ for all }\omega\text{ in }\Omega. \] Then \[ \dim_H(E) \geq 2\alpha+c. \] This improves (thanks to a similar but simplified approach) previous bounds about sets of Furstenberg type such as those by \textit{N. H. Katz} and \textit{T. Tao} [New York J. Math. 7, 149--187 (2001; Zbl 0991.28006)] and \textit{J. Bourgain} [J. Anal. Math. 112, 193--236 (2010; Zbl 1234.11012)].
