While Lie triple systems are the infinitesimal objects attached to the symmetric spaces, Lie-Yamaguti algebras are the infinitesimal objects attached to reductive homogeneous spaces. Algebraically, a Lie-Yamaguti algebra is a vector space endowed with a binary and a ternary products satisfying suitable identities. If the binary product is trivial, then the Lie-Yamaguti algebra is a Lie triple system, and if the ternary product is trivial, it is a Lie algebra. In the paper under review, a cohomology theory is considered for Lie Yamaguti algebras, and this is used to deal with formal deformations of these systems. This cohomology theory, suitable to study deformations, is different from the one considered by \textit{K. Yamaguti} [Kumamoto J. Sci., Math. 8, 135--146 (1969; Zbl 0249.17011)].
