This is the fifth volume in the series ``Mathematics in industrial problems''. The motivation for these volumes is to foster interaction between industry and the academic mathematics community. The problems presented in the book come from industry: they arise from models developed by the industrial scientists in ventures directed at the manufacture of new or improved products. At the same time, these problems have the potential for mathematical challenge and novelty. Avner Friedman visited industries and had discussions with their scientists to identify such problems. Subsequently some of the scientists presented their problems in the IMA (Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications) Seminar on Industrial Problems. The book is based on questions raised in the seminar and subsequent discussion. It is addressed to both mathematicians and industrial researchers. The following areas are tackled: 1. Sparse matrix methods for chemical process simulation, 2. High speed coating of optical fibers, 3. Imaging by random coverage, 4. Stress-assisted diffusion in glassy polymers, 5. Kinetic swelling of crosslinked polymer, 6. Stochastic analysis of a slotted communication channel, 7. Mathematical problems in color visualization, 8. Simulated annealing in protein folding, 9. Ideal forming theory, 10. Predicting properties of composite materials, 11. Interprocessor memory contention, 12. Computation of volume integrals in potential theory, 13. Mathematics of blood analysis, 14. Averaged equations for layered and blocky media, 15. Brownian dynamics simulations of colloidal dispersion, 16. Kinematic models of photobleaching, 17. Micromagnetics, 18. A Bayesian framework for computer vision, 19. Stress from trenches in semiconductor devices. Each chapter is devoted to one of the talks and is self-contained. The chapters usually provide references to the mathematical literature and a list of open problems which are of interest to the industrial scientists. For some problems partial solution is indicated briefly. The last chapter of the book contains a short description of solutions to some of the problems raised in previous volumes, as well as references to papers in which such solutions have been published.
