Given a curve \(C\) over a field \(k\) and \(J(C)\) its Jacobian, the author studies the logaritmic derivative \(\text{dlog: Pic}(C) \to \text{H}^{1}(C,\Omega^{1}_{C/{\mathbb Z}})\), where \(\text{Pic}(C)\) is the Picard group of \(C\) and \(\text{H}^{1}(C,\Omega^{1}_{C/{\mathbb Z}})\) is the first cohomology group of \(C\) with coefficients in the sheaf of its differentials relative to \(\mathbb Z\). In fact, if \(\text{H}^{1}(C,\Omega^{1}_{C/{\mathbb Z}})=k\), then the author shows that \(\text{dlog}\) is the composition of the degree map \(\text{deg: Pic}(C) \to {\mathbb Z}\) with the natural ring homomorphism \({\mathbb Z} \to k\). In case the curve \(C\) is an elliptic curve, the author gives a more concrete information on what information on \(\text{Pic}(C)\) can be recovered from the map \(\text{dlog}\).
