Let \(\overline\rho: G_{\mathbb{Q}}\to \text{GL}_2(\mathbb{K})\) be a continuous, absolutely irreducible two-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group \(G_{\mathbb{Q}}= \text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\) in a finite field \(\mathbb{K}\) of odd characteristic. The authors refine the methods of \textit{R. Ramakrishna} [Ann. Math. (2) 156, No. 1, 115--154 (2002; Zbl 1076.11035)] to construct, under appropriate hypotheses on \(\overline\rho\), lifts which are not only finitely ramified and potentially semistable, but which also have finite Selmer groups. They also show how to remove the generalized Riemann hypothesis in the construction of the infinitely ramified Galois representations of [\textit{R. Ramakrishna}, Ann. Math. (2) 151, No. 2, 793--815 (2000; Zbl 1078.11510)].
