The paper deals with the reduction problem for Poisson pencils associated to Gelfand-Zakharevich (GZ) systems. Recall that a GZ is a special type of a bi-Hamiltonian system. It consists of a smooth manifold \(M\) together with a pencil \(P_{\lambda}=P'-\lambda\cdot P\) of compatible Poisson structures. In addition, a part of the structure is the collection of Hamiltonian functions which are polynomial in \(\lambda\) and satisfy certain properties. The reduction problem considered in the paper is the following. Let \(S\) be a symplectic leaf of a Poisson structure \(P\) belonging to the Poisson pencil of the GZ system. Is it possible to find a Poisson structure on \(S\) induced by a different element of the Poisson pencil, and such that the two reduced brackets on \(S\) are compatible, and the restrictions of the Hamiltonians to this leaf commute? In solving this problem, the authors use two different approaches: the first one considers the induced Poisson tensors on a tubular neighborhood of the symplectic leaf in question, and the second one looks at the induced symplectic form (thus, concentrating on the single symplectic leaf).
