Different from two-dimensional polynomial automorphisms, where the degree is either bounded or exponentially growing, the degree growth for a polynomial automorphism \(f\) of \(\mathbb{C}^k\), \(k\geq3\), might be polynomial. The author constructs automorphisms of \(\mathbb C^k\) such that \(\text{deg\,} (f^n)\) is about \(n^{l}\) for any \(l\leq[(k-1)/2]\). The author also provides birational maps of \(\mathbb{P}^k_{\mathbb{C}}\) such that \(\text{deg\,} (f^n)\) is about \(n^{l}\) for any \(0\leq l\leq k\). The author gives an example of a birational map of \(\mathbb{P}^3_{\mathbb{C}}\), where the degrees are Newman-Shanks-Williams primes, which were introduced during the study of finite simple groups with square order.
