The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it is shown how problems of scattering of waves by cracks can be reduced to systems of singular integral equations of the Cauchy type by using integral-transform techniques. Secondly, it is shown that the Green-function method can also yield systems of singular integral equations. The proof requires a careful investigation of the limiting process involved in the boundary conditions.
