For a meromorphic function \(f\) in the plane denote as usual by \(T(r,f)\) the Nevanlinna characteristic and by \(S(r,f)\) any quantity satisfying \(S(r,f)=o(T(r,f))\) as \(r\to\infty\) except possibly on a set of finite linear measure. Two meromorphic functions \(f\) and \(g\) share a value \(a \in \mathbb{C}\) CM (counting multiplicities), if \(f-a\) and \(g-a\) have the same zeros with the same multiplicities. For a positive integer \(k\) let \(N_k(r,1/(f-a))\) denote the counting function of the \(a\)-points of \(f\) of multiplicity at most \(k\). With these notations the author proves the following theorem. Theorem. Let \(f\) and \(g\) be non-constant meromorphic functions satisfying \(\overline{N}(r,1/g)+\overline{N}(r,g)=S(r,g)\) and \(\overline{N}(r,f)=S(r,f)\). If \(f\) and \(g\) share the value \(1\) CM, then \(f\) and \(g\) satisfy one of the following conditions: (i) \(f-1=c(g-1)\), where \(c\) is a nonzero constant. (ii) \((f-b)g=1-b\), where \(b \neq 1\) is a constant. (iii) \(T(r,f)=N_2(r,1/f)+S(r,f)\) and \(T(r,g)=N_1(r,1/f')+S(r,f)\). This theorem generalizes a result of \textit{R.~Nevanlinna} [Acta Math. 48, 367--391 (1926; JFM 52.0323.03)] which states that if two non-constant meromorphic functions \(f\) and \(g\) satisfy \(N(r,1/f) = N(r,1/g) = 0\), and if they share the value \(1\) CM, then either \(f=g\) or \(fg=1\). It also generalizes a result of \textit{R.~Brück} [Result. Math. 30, 21--24 (1996; Zbl 0861.30032)] which states that if a non-constant entire function \(f\) satisfies \(N(r,1/f')=S(r,f)\), and if \(f\) shares the value \(1\) CM with its derivative \(f'\), then \(f-1 = c(f'-1)\), where \(c\) is a nonzero constant.
