The maximal number m(G) of independent generators of an abelian subgroup of a primary group G is called the rank of G. The author classifies all finite 2-groups of rank at most 3 admitting an automorphism of order \(p=3\). The corresponding classification for \(p>3\) is given by the author [in J. Algebra 125, No.1, 1-12 (1989; see the preceding review Zbl 0678.20008)].
