The author investigates the behaviour of the Oka property with respect to deformations of compact complex manifolds. Two functions \(\sigma\) and \(\tau\) are introduced in order to quantify the Oka property. Using these two functions it is shown that in a family of compact complex manifolds the set of Oka fibres corresponds to a \(G_{\delta}\) set in the base. A necessary and sufficient condition for the limit fibre of a sequence of Oka fibres to be Oka is given. The case of noncompact fibres is also considered.
