Let \(p(\cdot) : \mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow [1,\infty)\) be a measurable function, and let \(w\) be a weight, that is, a measurable function which is positive almost everywhere. Then, the weighted variable Lebesgue space \(L^{p(\cdot)}(w)\) is defined as the collection of all measurable functions \(f\) such that \[\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\bigg(\frac{|f(x)|}{\lambda}\bigg)^{p(x)} \, w(x) \, dx<\infty\] for some \(\lambda>0\). For \(f\in L^{p(\cdot)}(w)\), the norm is defined by \[\|f\|_{L^{p(\cdot)}(w)}\equiv \inf\Bigg\{\lambda>0 : \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\bigg(\frac{|f(x)|}{\lambda}\bigg)^{p(x)} \, w(x) \, dx\le 1 \Bigg\}.\] It is found that for \(w\equiv 1, \, L^{p(\cdot)}(1)\) reduces to the ordinary variable Lebesgue space \(L^{p(\cdot)}\). The authors combine the notions considered in [\textit{D. Cruz-Uribe} et al., J. Math. Anal. Appl. 394, No. 2, 744--760 (2012; Zbl 1298.42021)] and [\textit{V. S. Rychkov}, Math. Nachr. 224, 145--180 (2001; Zbl 0984.42011)] to define the local Muckenhoupt class \(A^{\text{loc}}_{p(\cdot)}\) with the variable exponent \(p(\cdot)\) such that \(w\in A^{\text{loc}}_{p(\cdot)}\) if \[[w]_{A^{\text{loc}}_{p(\cdot)}}\equiv \sup_{Q\in\mathcal{Q}, |Q|\le 1}|Q|^{-1}\|\chi_Q\|_{L^{p(\cdot)}(w)}\|\chi_Q\|_{L^{p^{\prime}(\cdot)}(\sigma)}<\infty,\] where \(\sigma\equiv w^{-\frac{1}{p(\cdot)-1}}\) and the supremum is taken over all cubes \(Q\in\mathcal{Q}\) with volume less than 1. Here, \(\mathcal{Q}\) is the set of all compact cubes whose edges are parallel to coordinate axes. Using the concept of sparseness, the authors prove the boundedness of generalized local Calderón-Zygmund operators. They obtain the characterization of the local Muckenhoupt weighted Lebesgue spaces with variable exponent in terms of compactly supported smooth wavelets. Moreover, some modular inequalities for wavelet characterizations are also established.
