Given a Banach space \(X\) and an infinite subset in the dual space \(A\subset X^*\), the paper under review explores under which conditions a biorthogonal system in \(X\times A\) exists with the same cardinality of \(A\). This is seen as a non-separable extension of earlier work by the authors [Smooth analysis in Banach spaces. Berlin: de Gruyter (2014; Zbl 1327.46002), Theorem 3.56]. This is in turn applied in order to study the following problem: Given a Banach space \(Y\) with a long sub-symmetric basis and a noncompact bounded linear operator \(T:X\rightarrow Y\), under which conditions does there exist a bounded linear operator \(S:X\rightarrow Y\) such that the image of the unit ball of \(X\) under \(S\) contains the basis of \(Y\). The reader is referred to the interesting paper for details.
