Let \(G\) be a semi-simple algebraic group over a field of characteristic \(p>0\). Although much effort has been made over a number of years to understand the cohomology groups of line bundles on the flag manifold for \(G\) the structure of these \(G\)-modules is still rather a mystery. In this paper the author studies the socle series of such representations. He proves that if the Lusztig conjecture on the irreducible characters for \(G\) holds then these series satisfy the same sum formula as the Jantzen- type filtrations constructed by the reviewer [in Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér., IV. Sér. 16, 495-528 (1983; Zbl 0545.20030)]. To prove this he draws among other things upon the work of the reviewer and \textit{M. Kaneda} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 59, No. 1, 74-98 (1989; Zbl 0681.20029)] as well as upon earlier work of his own [J. Algebra 134, No. 1, 225-256 (1990; Zbl 0732.20028)]. The paper ends with a section containing explicit calculations of multiplicities in the socle series of the 0'th cohomology group in the case where \(G\) has type \(G_ 2\). In particular, he verifies in this case the Humphreys cancellation principle.
