Let G be a semisimple simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p>0\), T a maximal torus, and B a Borel subgroup containing T corresponding to the negative roots of G with respect to T. The paper is devoted to an investigation into the structure of the cohomology groups of the line bundle L(\(\lambda)\) on G/B induced from a character, or weight, \(\lambda\) of T. Call \(\lambda\) generic dominant if \(H^{\ell (w)}(w\cdot \lambda)\) is the only nonzero cohomology group for any element w of the Weyl group W, where \(\ell ( )\) is the length function on W. For a generic dominant weight \(\lambda\), \(w\in W\) and a simple reflection \(s_{\alpha}\), the authors construct G- homomorphisms \(H^{\ell (s_{\alpha}w)}(s_{\alpha}w\cdot \lambda)\leftrightarrow H^{\ell (w)}(w\cdot \lambda)\), which are induced from homomorphisms at the minimal parabolic \(P_{\alpha}\) level, so that in putting them together in either order the sequence is exact. Using these homomorphisms, together with some homomorphisms from W to the group of transformations of the set of weights, the authors prove that there is a region of generic dominant weights such that for every weight \(\lambda\) in it and any \(w\in W\), \(H^{\ell (w)}(w\cdot \lambda)\) has an irreducible socle and an irreducible head. (This result has also independently been obtained by \textit{H. H. Andersen} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 295, 397-415 (1986; Zbl 0593.14033)] using a different method.) The authors also give an upper bound for the set of composition factors of H 0(\(\lambda)\), and conjecture that the bound equals the set for \(\lambda\) in some region. (In their paper [Pac. J. Math. 130, 253-273 (1987)] the authors verified the conjecture, using a result due to \textit{J. Ye} [Math. Z. 189, 515-527 (1985; Zbl 0561.20031)].) Finally, the authors compute the generic socle series patterns of H 0(\(\lambda)\) for the groups of type \(A_ 2\) and \(B_ 2\).
