    Pseudosymmetric and semisymmetric hypersurfaces in a semi-Euclidean or affine space are considered. The semi-Riemannian manifold (\(M,g\)) is called pseudosymmetric, if for any tangent vector fields \(X_ 1\), \(X_ 2\), \(X_ 3\), \(X_ 4\), \(X\) and \(Y\) the following holds: \[ \tilde R\circ R(X_ 1,X_ 2,X_ 3,X_ 4,X,Y)=LQ(g,R)(X_ 1,X_ 2,X_ 3,X_ 4,X,Y) \] where \(g\) is the semi-Riemannian metric form on \(M\); \(\tilde R\) and \(R\) are the type (\(1,3\)) and (\(0,4\)) curvature tensors on \(M\), \(L\) is a function on \(M\), \[ \tilde R\circ R(X_ 1,X_ 2,X_ 3,X_ 4,X,Y)=- R(\tilde R(X,Y)X_ 1,X_ 2,X_ 3,X_ 4)-R(X_ 1,X_ 2,X_ 3,\tilde R(X,Y)X_ 4) \] and \[ Q(g,R)(X_ 1,X_ 2,X_ 3,X_ 4,X,Y)=R(g(Y,X_ 1)X-g(X,X_ 1)Y,X_ 2,X_ 3,X_ 4)+\dots+ \] \[ +R(X_ 1,X_ 2,X_ 3,g(Y,X_ 4)X-g(X,X_ 4)Y). \] In the case, when \(L\) vanishes identically, (\(M,g\)) is called semisymmetric. It is known [\textit{J. Deprez}, Rend. Semin. Mat., Torino 44, 303-316 (1986; Zbl 0616.53018)] that a semisymmetric hypersurface in a Euclidean space is a sphere; or a cone or a cylinder over a sphere, or a cone over a cylinder over a sphere; or is a rank \(\leq 1\) hypersurface. In this article it is proved (Theorem 1) that a pseudosymmetric hypersurface in a semi-Euclidean space is (locally) either semisymmetric or its second fundamental form \(H\) satisfies the equation \(H^ 2+\alpha H+\beta g=0\). The algebraic description of the second fundamental form of a pseudosymmetric hypersurface is obtained (Theorem 2). It turns out that similar theorems are true for pseudosymmetric hypersurfaces in affine space. The proof uses tensor analysis methods and the Gauss equation for hypersurfaces.
