It is proved that a) a finite semigroup is aperiodic iff it is a homomorphic image of a finite semigroup whose inverse subsemigroups are semilattices; b) a finite inverse semigroup can be represented by order-preserving mappings on a chain iff it is a semilattice; c) the quasivariety of all finite aperiodic semigroups and the quasivariety of finite semigroups embeddable into semigroups of order-preserving mappings on finite chains are pseudo-small, i.e., they can be reached from the trivial quasivariety by a finite increasing sequence of quasivarieties with only a finite number of pseudovarieties between them.
