The authors study the asymptotic behaviour of oscillating integrals \(\int_{{\mathbb R}^n} e^{itf(x)}\varphi(x)\,dx\), when \(t\) tends to \(\infty\). The authors make use of properties of the Newton polyhedron \(\Gamma(f)\) of the phase \(f\). It is proved that, for \(f\) non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron and the support of \(\varphi\) sufficiently small, the coefficient \(\mu(\varphi)\) of the expected leading term in the oscillating integral can be expressed in terms of principal value integrals. The paper also contains an answer to a conjecture of \textit{J. Denef} and \textit{P. Sargos} [Math. Ann. 293, 193--211 (1992; Zbl 0778.32010)] \(\mu(\varphi)=0\) under certain conditions.
