Problems in unbounded spatial domains are encountered frequently in various fields of application (acoustics, aerodynamics, electromagnetic, geophysics and meteorology). The authors derive Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) boundary conditions for unbounded wave guides. Some boundary value problems for unbounded acoustic wave guides (for instance: Helmholtz equation on an unbounded cylinder \({\mathcal D=R}\setminus \Omega\), \(R\) a semi-infinite wave guide or duct, \(\Omega \) a bounded domain; the boundary conditions are specified on an artificial interface \({\mathcal B}\)) are presented in two and three dimensions and their cross-sectional eigenfunctions, the DtN formulations for computing such problems with finite elements. The analysis of these formulations shows the boundary conditions to be exact and presents simple criteria for selecting the number of terms to guarantee a unique solution. Local approximations provide a basis for modified boundary conditions that are unique for any number of terms. Numerical results that validate the performance of the finite element method with DtN boundary conditions in two and three dimensions and that confirm the analytical results are presented.
