The paper considers the problem of robustness of stability for linear continuous-time finite-dimensional dynamical systems. Using the matrix sign function defined in the first part of the paper an efficient algorithm to compute the stability radius is presented. The discrete-time case is also considered. Finally, a simple numerical example is given. Moreover, remarks and comments on the relationships between different algorithms for computing the stability radius are presented. Similar robustness problems have been recently considered in the paper [\textit{D. Hinrichsen} and \textit{N. K. Son}, Int. J. Robust Nonlinear Control 1, No. 2, 79-97 (1991; Zbl 0754.93060)].
