A continuous linear operator from a Banach space \(X\) to a subspace \(V \subset X\) is called a projection if it is an identity operator on \(V\). Let \(n \geq 2\) be a natural number and let \(n=n_1+\ldots+n_k\) be some fixed representation of \(n\) as a sum of natural numbers. In the paper under review, \(X=L^p([0,1]^n)\), \(1 \leq p<\infty\), and \(V\) is the subspace of \(X\) consisting of all the functions \(f(x_1, \ldots , x_n)\) from \(X\) of the form \(f=f_1+\ldots + f_k\), where \(f_1\) depends only on the \(n_1\) variables of the block \(x_1, \ldots , x_{n_1}\), \(f_2\) depends only on the \(n_2\) variables of the next block \(x_{n_1+1}, \ldots , x_{n_1+n_2}\), and so on. For an \(f\in X\), let \(Q_0f\) be its average value on the cube \([0,1]^n\), and let \(Q_i f\), \(i=1, \ldots ,k\), be the function depending only on the variables of the \(i\)th block that is obtained from \(f\) by averaging it over the remaining variables. The author proves that the operator \[ Qf=Q_1f+\ldots + Q_kf -(k-1)Q_0 f \] is an \(X \to V\) projection of minimal norm. A generalization to Orlicz spaces and some other related results are also given.
