It is well-known that the multiresolution analysis plays a very important role in studying the theory of wavelets and its applications. A function that generates a multiresolution is called a mother function. In the article under review, the authors investigate necessary conditions on a mother function and then the definition of mother function is generalized from \(\mathbb{R}^n\) to a locally compact Abelian group and the union density and intersection triviality properties of multiresolution analysis are characterized in terms of the spectral functions (mother functions). Finally, all multiresolution analysis conditions are characterized in terms of the scaling and the spectral functions.
