    Examples of ODE's derived from fluid dynamics PDE's are reviewed. Examples, among them the Lorenz equations, are chosen to represent both chaotic and non-chaotic behaviour. A procedure for selecting the best dimension for accurate approximation of PDE's by ODE's is presented.
