Let \((M,g)\) be a real analytic pseudo-Riemannian manifold. An integrable complex structure \(J\) on an open neighborhood \(\Omega_ 0\) of the zero section in the tangent bundle \(TM\) is called adapted if for every geodesic \(\gamma : I\subset \mathbb R\to M\) there is a complex disc \(0\in\Delta\subset \mathbb C\) such that \(\gamma^{\mathbb C} : \Delta \to (\Omega_ 0,J),\;t+\text{i}s\mapsto s \gamma'(t)\) is holomorphic. The author deals with the existence of the adapted complex structures for a real analytic Riemannian manifold by using a locally biholomorphic map obtained from a notion of complexification of the geodesic flow of the manifold. It is shown that if the geodesic flow can be complexified to a complete holomorphic flow, then a sufficient criterion can be given for a domain in the tangent bundle to be a maximal domain of definition of an adapted complex structure. This criterion is used to determine maximal domains of definition for adapted complex structures for Berger spheres and the Heisenberg group.
