The paper proposes a technique to obtain local error estimators for the boundary element method (BEM). It is based on the iteration of the solution of the given boundary integral equations by the complementary boundary integral relation. For example, the flux obtained from Symm's equation is iterated using the hypersingular integral equation. It is claimed that the difference between the solution and its iterate can be used as local error estimator for developing an adaptive BEM. Some numerical examples for the unit circle are included.
