The authors successfully apply adaptive boundary element methods to general strongly elliptic integral equations. They obtain a-posteriori error estimates for boundary element solutions. Some numerical examples are considered to show that these adaptive procedures are reliable and effective. This work extends some earlier works of the second author [(i) Z. Angw. Math. Mech. 68, T 435-T 437 (1988) and (ii) A -posteriori error estimates and adaptive approaches for some boundary element methods in Boundary element methods I, Vol. I, 241-256 (\textit{C. A. Brebbia}, \textit{G. Kuhn} (eds.)) (1987; Zbl 0632.73077)].
