The possibility to justify the effectiveness of adaptive numerical methods for boundary integral equations by an a posteriori error estimator is discussed. A general variational problem in Sobolev spaces is considered. An a posteriori two-sided estimate for the error of the Galerkin approximation is found. Symm's and hypersingular integral equations are considered as model problems. These equations are equivalent to Dirichlet and Neumann problems for the Laplace equation. Some numerical examples are presented.
