The main result of the paper is a version of the Andersén-Lempert theorem with additional approximation on a non-compact totally real set: Let \(K\subset \mathbb{C}^n\) be a compact set, let \(\Omega\) be an open neighborhood of \(K\), and \(\Phi_t: \Omega\cup \mathbb{R}^s \to \mathbb{C}^n\) an isotopy of smooth embeddings, \(s < n\), \(\Phi_0=\mathrm{id}\), such that there is a compact set \(C\subset \mathbb{R}^s\) with the property that for all \(t\), \(\Phi_t|_{\mathbb{R}^s\setminus C}=\mathrm{id}\), \(\Phi_t|_\Omega\) is holomorphic, \(\Phi_t(K\cup\mathbb{R}^s)\) is polynomially convex, \(\Phi_t(\mathbb{R}^s\setminus K)\) is totally real. Then for any \(k\in \mathbb{N}\) we have that \(\Phi_1\) is \(\mathcal{C}^k\)-approximable on \(K\cup \mathbb{R}^s\) in the sense of Carleman by holomorphic automorphisms of \(\mathbb{C}^n\). As an application the authors prove that any smooth automorphism of \(\mathbb{R}^s\), \(s < n\), can be approximated in the sense of Carleman by holomorphic automorphisms of \(\mathbb{C}^n\).
