The authors construct a computationally efficient and symmetry preserving iterative algorithm based on the conjugate gradient least squares method to solve the matrix model updating problem. The method can both maintain the short recurrences and satisfy a minimization property. The authors show that the updated damping and stiffness matrices yield the unique least Frobenius norm solution of a new minimization problem. The proposed method updates the damping and stiffness matrices simultaneously and the updated model remains symmetric. The convergence of the algorithm is established. The efficiency and reliability of the proposed method is illustrated by using two numerical examples.
